How to invite testers to a closed test in Play Console

Create the closed track

In Play Console, open Testing, then Closed testing, and create a track. Upload the AAB you intend to test. Give the release a name you will recognise in a fortnight, because you will be looking at it again.

Build the tester list

You can use an email list managed in Play Console or a Google Group. Email lists are simpler for one app. A Google Group is worth the setup if you run several apps, because you manage membership in one place rather than per track.

Add the Google account addresses your testers actually sign in to on their phones. An address they never use on that device will not register as opted in.

Share the opt-in link

Copy the opt-in URL from the track and send it to your testers. This is the step people skip. Adding an email address does not invite anyone or notify anyone - nothing happens until each person opens that link and accepts.

Confirm the count

Return to the closed track and check the opted-in tester figure. That number, not your list length, is what Google evaluates. The 14-day clock is only meaningful once it sits at twelve or above.

Then leave it alone

Keep the track live and the build available for the full window. You can ship updates to the same track without resetting the counter. What you must not do is take the test down and restart it.
